Multiple Histories

Photographic film scans 2015-17 Charlie Gao

Selected scans of the ends of 35mm film used in other works.

Containing no referent, this work demonstrates that it is solely the photographer's intent, the designation of significance which creates the true indexical property of photography.

The title Multiple Histories refers to the infinite possibility for each roll of film, before the photographer fixes a single history (slice of space-time) for each frame.

The title also has meaning in modern cosmology and quantum mechanics, referring to theories of the universe which describe our history itself changing at each point in time (rather than more common formulations such as the branching out of parallel universes).

Such a reality could still produce the coherent experiences we live in, but what then the meaning of records, memories, or indeed intent?
