Image / Imagination
Synchronised sequence 2010-17 Charlie Gao
The simultaneous arrangement of two images side-by-side immediately allows us to form an association in our minds. Sometimes simple, sometimes requiring a wild leap of imagination.
The arising connotation was never in any sense encoded in either of the photographs, but given the arrangement chosen by the photographer, allows a separate level of communication beyond the pure image, which is nevertheless intended and shareable with the viewer.
This process can draw out referents that are not seen, but felt or implied even, as traces of blood left at a crime scene may alude to where a body has already been removed.
